Sipi (Anaerobic Natural, Uganda)
Sipi (Anaerobic Natural, Uganda)
This anaerobic natural comes to us from Sipi, Mount Elgon in Eastern Uganda. Produced by smallholders of the Mt Elgon community and supplied to Zukuka Bora.
Zukuka Bora was set up to fund and support the communities of Mt Elgon region, and together with its partner NGO JENGA, deliver community-wide benefits such as healthcare, education sponsorship and community savings.
Farmers are placed central to this project. They receive support and training, and receive top-rate prices, provided with access to a specialty market with bonuses based on company sales
Sorley visited Zukuka Bora in 2024 and was struck by the power of coffee as a vehicle for social change. What was particularly impressive was the drive to add value to the coffee at every possible step, introducing innovation in processing, cultivating non-native varietals, for the end goal of improving life in the community
Uganda is blessed with a stunning geography for growing incredible coffee: climate, high altitudes, nitrate-rich soils, and the work Zukuka Bora do aims to put Ugandan coffee back on the map.
This is the second year we have bought Sipi at Carter and we are delighted to bring this favourite of last year back on the offering
In the cup we are tasting orange wine, guava, and a booziness
